Makino-kun finished his final presentation!

Makino-kun finished his final presentation for his bachelor thesis. He started his experiments on a 2-dimensional superconductor just after the pseudo-lock down due to Covid-19 last June. The sample he investigated was discovered within the bunch of crystals which were abandoned by the former lab owner (retired professor). I just asked Makino-kun to measure the resistivity to confirm the superconducting transition temperature Tc for future low-temperature STM measurement. Surprisingly, he found that the crystals show superconductivity at the temperature which is three times higher than the reported Tc, and then his bachelor work started. Although he confirmed that all crystals show the same Tc in the resistivity measurement and identified the crystals are definitely the material through chemical analysis and x-ray structure analysis, thermodynamic properties, specific heat and magnetization, show no anomaly in their temperature dependencies. After literature search, we found an interesting paper talking about thermal annealing effects resulting in the enhancement of Tc only at the surface of the material. We assume that the same thing is happening on our crystals. To confirm that, he started crystal growth thanks to lots of advices and helps by Prof. Ohashi and Prof. Okamoto. We are sure that he will clarify the mechanism of the Tc enhancement in his graduate research! Congratulations, Makino-kun and let’s continue the exciting research!
