世界中から分野をリードする学者や、新進気鋭の若手研究者を集めて、世界に通用する一大研究拠点を形成しつつある、沖縄科学技術大学院大学（OIST）。私達の分野からも、今後日本の低温STM業界を牽引すると期待される、元東北大学の岡田先生が去年の夏に着任し、着々とその研究室の立ち上げを進めておられます。今回は、今後の共同研究の相談も含め、重い電子系物質に対するSTMを用いた研究の過去と未来というコンセプトで話をして欲しいとの岡田先生の依頼から、小松からひとっ飛び沖縄に行ってきました。色々なサンプルを測定をした経験があるとはいえ、まだまだ論文としては、一本しか世に出ていないので、このような内容で発表をするのはおこがましいかと思いましたが、まあ良い機会だと思って、これまでの研究を色々と勉強して発表を準備しました。夜に沖縄に着いて沖縄そばを堪能したその翌朝、東京理科大の坂田研出身で、岡田研のポスドクをしている、藤澤君がホテルまで迎えにきてくれました。OISTの駐車場に着くと、まずその海の美しさに感激。でも、どうやらこれは沖縄ではデフォルトらしく、藤澤君はもはや感動する様子もありません。その後、素敵なOISTの建物を楽しみにながら、岡田先生の部屋を経由して、セミナーの部屋へ。もう一人のスピーカーの琉球大学の小林先生が既にスタンバッテおられて、すぐにセミナーが始まりました。小林先生の重い電子系物理のOverviewの後に、勉強してきた内容と物性研での結果を発表しました。白熱した議論の後、私の古い友人も参加して、岡田研&OISTの見学ツアー。いやはや、もうこんなに装置が立ち上がっているとは。それにしても、潤沢な資金を伺わせる装置の数々。他の研究室も、同じく高価な装置が並んでいました。物性研、理研を思わせる研究者の天国のような場所でした。物性研にもあったストックルーム（研究に必要な物品を取り揃えてあって、必要な時にすぐ買いに来れるそのような部門）にも連れて行ってもらい、常駐職員までいるその充実ぶりに衝撃。岡田先生は、そこの職員のおばちゃんたちのアイドルのような存在であることも分かりました。いろんな意味で、完全に圧倒された沖縄滞在となりました。また来たいな〜、でも金沢での実験室の整備も早くヤンなきゃ。負けてられません。

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is gathering famous established scholars and young prestigious scientists in the last decade and now rapidly developing as one of leading research institutes in the world. In our research field, Prof. Yoshinori Okada, who is one of the most prestigious young low-temperature STM scientists, started his laboratory last year. I and Prof. Okada have been collaborating. This time, he kindly invited me to Okinawa and asked me to give a talk about past and future of STM investigations on heavy fermion systems. Since I have never been to Okinawa, I immediately accepted the offer and flied to Okinawa from Komatsu. Next morning, Dr. Fujisawa, who just graduated from Prof. Sakata group in Tokyo University of Science, picked me up at my hotel and brought me to OIST. First of all, I was so astonished by wonderful views of Okinawan beaches! And then I was also impressed by the beautiful and stylish building of OIST. After giving a souvenir from Kanazawa to Prof. Okada, we moved to a seminar room. Prof. Kobayashi was already ready to start his talk and we started series of seminars about heavy fermions. Prof. Kobayashi gave us overview of heavy fermion physics and open questions in the research fields. After his nice and instructive talk, I talked about STM works on heavy fermions last several years and our works on CeCoIn5. It was very nice opportunity to discuss this topic intensively and we learned a lot through the discussions. After the seminars, we had a lab tour of his wonderful laboratory and the other laboratories in OIST. It was great to see around a growing research institute like OIST. I was so stimulated. I definitely want to come back here but now I feel more than before that I have to set up my instruments in Kanazawa as soon as possible! Thanks a lot for inviting me here, Prof. Okada!!
