台湾・台南市にある国立成功大学で行われた、成功大学ー金沢大学の大学間協定の調印式とそれに続けて行われたジョイントシンポジウムに、傳田君と吉田さんが参加してきました。他に物理コースからは、低温グループの渡辺君、新井研究室の見寺さんが出席しました。雨季の台南市はすでに猛暑。日本とは比べ物にならない暑さでしたが、トロピカルフルーツには絶好のシーズン。そんなことを楽しみに、朝から学長との大学見学から始まりました。第二次大戦以前の日本陸軍の建物や、昭和天皇が植えた巨大なガジュマルの木（なんとそれが大学のロゴになっているそうです）など、見どころ満載のキャンパスに圧倒されました。最後には、最も歴史ある建物だという大学内の博物館で調印式が行われました。格式高い建物の中に会場が用意されていて、学生にとっても教員にとってもとても良い経験になりました。
午後は、学長の開会の挨拶から、理工系、人文系（法学）に分かれてジョイントシンポジウムが行われました。成功大学のKuo先生のJanus粒子（この時初めて聞きましたが、とても興味深い研究です）に関する最新の研究、続いて金沢の當麻先生の有機太陽光パネルに関する講演、そしてHuang先生の教育的なトポロジカル物質に関する講演、最後に吉田さんの極低温・強磁場STMに関する講演が行われました。活発な議論が行われました。続いて、コーヒーブレイクを挟んで、学生さんによるポスターセッションが行われました。金沢から5名、成功大学からは15名の学生が参加されました。教員、学生入り乱れて活発な議論が行われ、最後には全ての学生に参加賞が手渡され、初めてのジョイントシンポジウムが成功裏に終えられました。そして、何と最後には日本からの参加者全員に高級マンゴーがプレゼントされました！手厚い歓迎と完璧な準備で迎えてくださった成功大学の関係者の皆様ありがとうございました。次回は来年、桜咲く4月の金沢で2回目のシンポジウムが行われる予定です。金沢でお会いできる日を楽しみにしております！
Naoki and Yasuo visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan, Taiwan to join Memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreement signing ceremony followed by the 1st joint symposium between NCKU and Kanazawa University. Other than us, Watanabe-kun (ULT group) and Mitera-san (Arai lab) from our department joined this trip. Tainan locates the tropical region, therefore it was already quite hot rainy season, however at the same time, the best season for tropical fruits! Expecting nice fruits afterward, our long day started with campus tour with our president. We looked around the beautiful and huge campus of NCKU. There are lots of old buildings which originally belonged to the Japanese army before the world war two. We took a picture in front of the huge Gajumaru tree which were plant by Showa Emperor when he was a prince. This tree is symbolized into the NCKU university log. At the end of the tour, we moved to the beautiful museum, oldest building on campus, and MOU signing ceremony was held between NCKU and KU there.
After lunch, the 1st joint symposium between NCKU and KU started with our president’s opening remark. The 1st speaker was Prof. Kuo in NCKU and he talked about Janus particles which are nanoparticle implemented two different functionalities. We never heard about such materials but it was quite an interesting topic. The next speaker was Prof. Taima from Kanazawa talking about fabrications of organic and inorganic solar panels. Next, Prof. Huang gave a very instructive talk about topological materials and his research achievements on related materials. Finally, Yasuo gave a talk about low-temperature, high-magnetic field STM with spin and orbital sensitivities. We had a lot of discussions on each topic. After the coffee break, the student poster session started with 5 KU and 15 NCKU students. Lots of discussions went on and at the end of the session, all participants were awarded for participants prizes. Surprisingly, best-quality Taiwan Mangos were given to all Japanese participants! Many thanks for great hospitality and organizations, NCKU organizers and faculty members! We are planning to the 2nd joint symposium in Kanazawa next year Sakura season! See you next time in Kanazawa!
